Uber and Out?

22 September 2017

In recent months, set-backs and negative press have been common for Taxi hailing App Uber, but the latest blow may be terminal for their business in London.

Transport for London (TfL) has decided not to renew Uber’s private hire operator’s license when it expires on 30 September 2017.

Contrary to some media reports, TfL’s decision is not connected to Uber’s engaging drivers as self-employed or the Employment Tribunal judgment against them concerning employment status.

Instead TfL’s decision is based on public safety and security implications from the way the company is run. Specific issues raised were Uber’s approach to reporting criminal offences, obtaining medical certificates, backgrounds checks for drivers and their software which is allegedly designed to restrict regulator access.

Uber has stated that it will appeal and while the court process is ongoing (which could be a considerable time) their 40,000 drivers will be able to continue serving their 3.5 million customers in the capital.
